General Theme "Glorious Connecticut"
- Theme: "Connecticut Dairies"
Over the years Connecticut has had its share of dairy farms such as Guida's Dairy, Ferndale Dairy and more recently Stew Leonard's Dairy. Driving by the farms one could see the cows grazing in the fields. To represent the "milkman" as he left bottles of milk at our doorstep each morning, please prepare an arrangement of white flowers of the designer's choice in a container of the designer's choice. Accessories are permitted. - Theme: "Basketball in Connecticut"
From High School to college to the WNBA at Mohegan Sun, basketball in the state is dominant. From the first games in November to March Madness many of us are glued to the television watching Geno's team take apart another opponent on the way to another title. Take your pick of school, high school, college or professional team and prepare an arrangement using the team's colors for accent. Type of flowers and container is designer's choice. School team name must be displayed along with accessories. - Theme: "Connecticut Business and Industry"
Yankee ingenuity has prevailed in Connecticut as many patents were awarded to the inventors of the cotton gin, helicopters, nuclear submarines and many others. These inventions created jobs and provided a great work force in the state. To recognize this ingenuity prepare an arrangement that shows the industrial state Connecticut is. Use red and white flowers with blue backdrop or others to depict the American workforce in the state. Because the Berlin brickyards provided so much local work, use clay pots for this assignment. Accessories are permitted. - Theme: "Holidays in Connecticut"
"Home for the Holidays" is a tradition all over the world and here in Connecticut is no exception. It doesn't matter which holiday it is, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, Easter or any other, people always gather together to celebrate. For this category prepare a dinner setting for whatever holiday you choose. A picnic dinner setting is acceptable for a summer holiday. Setting should include an appropriate table cloth with a matching napkin. I dinner plate and goblet is also required. Provide a single candlestick and holder in a color to match the setting. No silverware needed. Prepare a small arrangement, no more than 12" high to compliment the setting. Flowers and container are the designer's choice. No accessories allowed. - Theme: "The Roses of Elizabeth Park"
We can be proud of American's oldest municipal rose garden located in Hartford. This 100-year-old garden has been the setting for many a wedding under the arching roses or in the rose-covered gazebo. Wandering through these gardens, which features hundreds of varieties of roses, people young and old can be seen enjoying the roses through the eyes of a camera or savoring the fragrant aromas and colors. Prepare and arrangement or vase of cut roses for this category. Roses should be mixed varieties to depict the many varieties at the park. No accessories permitted but floral or green fill ins are allowed. - Theme: Theatre & Music in Connecticut"
Summer in the state brings many concerts on the green. A warm summer under the stars listening to the strains of a Glen Miller tune or a sharp Souza march is a pleasure to behold. Meanwhile there are theatre productions at the Bushnell, the Connecticut Cabaret Theatre or music stars like Dave Matthews or Kenny Chesney at the Comcast Theatre or the Oakdale. Please prepare an arrangement with a musical flair using all carnations in a kaleidoscope of colors. Containers and accessories are the designer's choice. - Theme: "Connecticut's Casinos"
The wonder of it all echoes from over the tree tops in southeastern Connecticut. Many have been drawn to either Foxwoods or the Mohegan Sun casinos. All the lucrative slot machines or table games dare you to play and "win big." Of course we can't forget the entertainment and dining offered at the casinos. Prepare a tall, glitzy arrangement depicting what the casinos have to offer. Flowers of any kind and color may be used to show the beauty of the casino. The container should match the arrangement. Accessories are permitted. - Theme: "Autumn in Connecticut"
Fall in Connecticut is astounding. Driving the back roads of the state at this time of year and viewing all the various leaf color changes Mother Nature has provided will certainly take your breath away. Each tree in its glorious splendor brings to mind how beautiful Connecticut can be at this time of the year. Please show the beauty of autumn in an arrangement of fall colored mums settling in a straw container. Place arrangement in a bed of rocks depicting the stone walls seen all over the back roads of Connecticut. Accessories permitted. - Theme: "The Beautiful Connecticut Shoreline"
When summer is here the traffic on Route 9 South is unbearable as the lines of cars head to the beautiful sandy beaches of Connecticut. Places such as Rocky Neck, Miami Beach, Hammonassett and Sound View Beach and all the many others are a sight to behold. Beach umbrellas of every size and color dot the sandy beaches. Babies getting their first feel of the ocean water to the elderly grandma sitting in the beach chair at the water's edge and enjoying the feel of the waves splashing over their feet. To represent the beaches, prepare a sea worthy arrangement of blue and white flowers and sand to depict the water, clouds and the beach. Container should complement the arrangement. Beach accessories are permitted but not required. - Theme: "Antiquing in Connecticut"
Many a barn in our area have been converted into an antique shop. Antiquing in Connecticut is a great draw on a Sunday or a warm summer day while looking for that one special treasure. Antique jewelry, tableware, books and almost anything that is collectable is of interest to the discerning shopper. As flea markets become more prevalent throughout the state, people are out early to grab what interests them the most. For this category prepare a dried arrangement in an antique flair. Container should be antique or antique-looking. Accessories are permitted. - Theme: "History in Connecticut"
Whatever type of state history appeals to you there is plenty it in our small state. If it's art history, visit the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme. If you are interested in the history of the seas, stop by the Mystic Seaport and look back to our whaling past. For circus lovers there is the Barnum Museum in Bridgeport. Connecticut history can be found on town greens across the state. Look for it. Let your imagination run wild in this category. An arrangement must be made showing Connecticut as the historical state that it is. Flowers, containers and accessories are at the designer's discretion. - Theme: "Wreaths or Swags"
No matter what the holiday or season anyone with a front door on their home seems to decorate it with a wreath or swag to suit the occasion. This is traditional Connecticut. Go ahead and prepare a wreath or swag to dress your door front representing your favorite season or holiday. The base form must be made by the entrant. Use of floral pieces or fruit must be fresh. Artificial or painted fill-ins are permitted. Please provide a means to hang the entry.
